The number of environmental activists killed around the world is on the rise. Global Witness recently reported that there have been nearly 1000 murders in the last decade, mostly in the last few years. This is very likely an underestimate.
In response the Consultative Group on Biological Diversity (CGBD) has established and are directing a pooled fund so that funders can respond quickly to the growing pressures around the world on environmental defenders.
The overall goal of the Environmental Defenders Fund is to create a unique collaborative opportunity that allows a range of environmental and biodiversity funders to engage on the complex issue of “defenders under threat” in an efficient and under-the-radar manner.
