Los Angeles Waterkeeper: Ensuring Sustainable Water Supplies For All

As the leading community advocate for the region’s rivers, creeks and coastal waters, Los Angeles Waterkeeper (LAW) has long advocated for a comprehensive water management strategy for the region focusing on investment in conservation & efficiency (reduce), rainwater harvesting and graywater use (reuse), potable water reclamation (recycle), and restoration of our existing water supply sources (restore).

Using a community-based approach, LAW seeks to ensure sustainable and equitable water policies and clean, safe, and healthy waters for all Angelenos, LAW is working in three main areas.

First, LAW promotes the 4R (reduce, reuse, recycle, restore) approach to water through our Integrated Water Management (IWM) campaign, focusing on promoting greater water conservation, dramatically increasing capture and reuse of stormwater and urban runoff, development of large-scale water purification throughout Los Angeles County, and remediation of contaminated groundwater sources to augment local supplies.

Second, the organization advocates for a comprehensive, community-based LA River Revitalization approach that uses multi-pronged engagement, coalition-building, and advocacy efforts to prioritize ecological restoration.

Finally, LAW works to continually build and expand a broad-based coalition of environmental and environmental and social justice organizations, non-traditional partners, elected and agency officials, and engaged community members to actively participate in shaping LA County’s water future.

Through collaborative partnerships, we support innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities. Our work is divided into six main program areas – Wildlands Conservation, Oceans Conservation, Climate Change, Indigenous Rights, Transforming California, and Innovative Solutions.
