R20 Regions of Climate Action

Currently, the majority of the world’s energy needs are met with fossil fuels that impact the health and economic well-being of local communities while accelerating climate change. The R20 Regions of Climate Action (R20) wants to change that. The solution? Introduce more sustainable models that can bring affordable, low carbon and climate resilient projects rapidly to market.

R20 is an international non-profit organization whose mission is to support and empower sub-national governments and communities in the identification, preparation and financing of bankable renewable energy and other green infrastructure projects (such as energy, waste, waster, and transport). R20 brings together these various stakeholders to deliver financially attractive projects with high social, economic, and environmental impact.

The R20 has members in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, North America, and South America. They have executed a number of projects across each geography, including a zero waste and energy efficiency program in Oran Algeria that began in 2013. The program has generated new jobs, and helped establish a modern waste collection, recycling, and compost infrastructure.

Through LDF support, R20 has worked closely with fifteen partners including members of the Cites Climate Finance Leadership Alliance (CCFLA), to identify a global pipeline of over 450 green infrastructure projects. For each project, they secured political commitments to support implementation from municipal and ministerial levels.

R20 has designed a model to accelerate investment into these types of projects, which they hope to translate into a series of ready-to-be-implemented programs at the subnational level. In selecting projects, R20 will favor those that have the greatest impact in preserving natural environments from destructive human activity in both urban and rural environments.

In order to properly measure, report, and verify impacts for each project, the R20 has placed an emphasis on integrating ESG screening criteria and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their programs.

In addition to CCFLA, R20 works closely with other notable organizations like Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL), the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP), and the UN regional Commissions.

Through collaborative partnerships, we support innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities. Our work is divided into six main program areas – Wildlands Conservation, Oceans Conservation, Climate Change, Indigenous Rights, Transforming California, and Innovative Solutions.
