CITES Implementation

The Pew Charitable Trusts are undertaking efforts to implement the 2013 and 2016 listings of sharks and rays on Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).  Appendix II species have been identified as species in which global trade must be managed to avoid over-exploitation.

This will be accomplished through six regional workshops and in-country work in Sri Lanka and Senegal. These workshops will also be used to identify countries that will sponsor future shark listings at the tentatively scheduled 2019 CITES meeting in Sri Lanka.

Through collaborative partnerships, we support innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities. Our work is divided into six main program areas – Wildlands Conservation, Oceans Conservation, Climate Change, Indigenous Rights, Transforming California, and Innovative Solutions.
