Reduce Shark Mortality in the Arabian Sea Around Pakistan

Brook Ward

Together with World Wildlife Fund, this grant supports efforts to measurably reduce shark mortality in the Arabian Sea around Pakistan. The project will provide a blueprint for establishing practical approaches to assist management at a national level.

Activities will include modification of existing fishing gear, the introduction of new gear to reduce shark bycatch, and development of a regional database/data sharing platform that will inform governments on progress and areas where regional government action is lacking. Improvements in Pakistan will be leveraged into greater regional cooperation within the Arabian Sea, and results of this project will be used to develop a regional strategy for the management of sharks.

Through collaborative partnerships, we support innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities. Our work is divided into six main program areas – Wildlands Conservation, Oceans Conservation, Climate Change, Indigenous Rights, Transforming California, and Innovative Solutions.
