Water Defense

Water Defense seeks to address the health, equity, and justice issues associated with the widespread problem of contaminated drinking water in communities across the United States. In tackling the many challenges ahead in this critical work, the Water Defense team uses its trademark approach combining research and citizen empowerment to hold polluters and authorities accountable.

Water Defense provides water sampling results to citizens in areas experiencing a water quality crisis, helping them interpret and use the data. Through this process, residents are empowered to hold industry and government accountable for remediating current drinking water contamination and preventing future contamination. Water Defense also supports local citizens by undertaking targeted outreach to shine a spotlight on industry and governmental officials responsible, holds them publicly accountable, and creates enormous pressure to take action.

Through collaborative partnerships, we support innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities. Our work is divided into six main program areas – Wildlands Conservation, Oceans Conservation, Climate Change, Indigenous Rights, Transforming California, and Innovative Solutions.
